Is Netflix going to block you from watching via VPN?

You have probably seen lots of buzz lately over Netflix’s supposed change of stance with regard to people accessing its services outside of the intending geographical region of the subscriber.

This has led many to question whether Netflix is going to block you from watching via VPN.

There have been reports of people being cut off from the service.

However, Netflix has come right out and said that it has not changed its stance about VPN connections. It should be remembered that VPN use is perfectly legal, but it IS against Netflix’s terms of service. As a business, they can pretty much make any terms they like. You no like, you no subscribe. Simple.

However, for years Netflix has kicked out VPN connections from known VPN IP ranges. Just search Google for “Netflix VPN not working” or similar. You will see results as recently as today to any time after they started business.

Although its easy to question the motivation n of Netflix to block connections, you have to respect that the providers of the content ultimately have the final say. For example, FoxTel in Australia, HBO in America and Sky in the UK own HBO content. If this weren’t the case, the studios would have to sell fewer contracts for less money, or so they would have you believe. Clearly, they are not motivated to do so in the present climate.

Therefore the studios will want to make sure that any broadcaster makes a re4asonable effort to protect its intellectual property. This can mean pay walls, encryption, DNS blockers, VPN IP mining.

With this is mind, just remember that Netflix now, and will always, try to block VPN connections. Ultimately it is just an annoyance tactic. They have no reasonable prospect of preventing access from outside regions, and they know this. But every time they manage to block a big provider like PureVPN or IPVanish a number of subscribers will just give up rather than wait a couple of hours or days to get back on.

My advice to those accessing Netflix via VPN is to simply not worry about it! Even if you get blocked you will get back on again in no time!
